Designed to meet stringent ‘farm to fork’ regulations such as EC 178/2002, PRISYM Trace provides everything required for compliance with current and future labelling legislation and guidelines, helping companies to avoid costly fines and product recalls.
EC 178/2002
This law stipulates that a manufacturer of food:
- Must be able to identify the origin of an individual product/ingredient and to whom a product has been supplied (one up/one down traceability)
- Must have systems and procedures in place to report to relevant authorities upon request
FSA proposals
In response to government pressure to promote healthy eating habits and following a six-month consultation period, the UK Food Standards Agency (FSA) recently unveiled new proposals.
The FSA proposal is based on a traffic light system, which colour codes key constituents such as fat, calorific value, salt and sugar according to their health credentials. For example, a product that is low in salt but high in fat would have a green salt rating and a red fat rating.
Food manufacturers are also required by law to provide details such as ingredients, weight and the name of their company, unless the food is sold loose. There have been calls for manufacturers to include more information on labels; for example the effects of ingredients and details of trace elements for people with allergies, to help the public understand what they are eating.
